A main note is a self-contained unit of information

Previous: The Zettelkasten is informed by what currently interests you

A main note is a self-contained unit of information. Its primary purposes are to provide value to the writer, and be able to connect with other main notes.

A main note is a container designed to hold and transport information. Even more so than other note types, a main note’s content is modular, able to move between different regions of your zettelkasten and into relationship with other content. A main note’s content typically comprises some version of the following seven components:

  1. A primary unit of information
  2. Additional information reinforcing the primary unit
  3. Connections in the form of links or references
  4. A title summing up the information contained in the note
  5. A unique identifier rendered as either an alphanumeric ID or timestamp
  6. A quote for referencing the origin of your thinking
  7. Usage links pointing to places you’ve used the information
